Choose the Roborock Q Revo if your home is mostly hard flooring. It vacuums and mops, and its dock empties the dustbin, washes and dries the mop pads, and refills the robot's water. Choose the Roomba j9+ if your home is mostly carpet, often cluttered, or prone to pet accidents. It doesn't mop at all, but its front camera is designed to recognize and steer around cords, socks and pet waste. Neither is its brand's newest robot, so in 2026 either one makes the most sense at a real discount.

Mopping decides it for most homes
If tile, luxury vinyl plank or sealed hardwood covers much of your floor, the Q Revo pulls ahead. Its two spinning pads scrub instead of dragging a damp cloth. The dock rinses the pads during the job and dries them afterward, so you aren't hand-washing pads after every run.
The trade-off is a different set of chores:
- Refill the clean-water tank.
- Dump and rinse the dirty-water tank.
- Wipe out the wash tray now and then.
The pads lift only slightly on carpet, so mark plush or shaggy rugs as no-mop zones in the app.
The Roomba j9+ doesn't mop. iRobot sold mopping versions of the j line, the Combo j7+ and Combo j9+, with a pad that retracts onto the robot's top. Their docks work differently from the Q Revo's, so compare dock features line by line before treating either as an equivalent. Not sure you need mopping at all? Read our take on whether a vacuum-and-mop combo is worth buying.
Obstacle avoidance and navigation
Avoidance is the j9+'s main strength. iRobot calls its camera system PrecisionVision. It is designed to identify hazards like charging cables, socks, shoes and solid pet waste and steer around them instead of dragging them through the house. iRobot has marketed the j-series to pet owners on exactly this point. If a pet-waste guarantee appears on the listing you're considering, read the current terms.
The Q Revo maps with LiDAR, a spinning laser sensor that builds accurate floor plans quickly and works the same with the lights off. What the base model lacks is a camera that recognizes objects. Robots without object recognition generally have a harder time with low, thin items like cords and socks.
Roborock has made camera-equipped variants, such as the Q Revo MaxV. With the base model, do a quick floor pickup before each run, or set no-go zones around cord clusters and pet areas.
For background, here's how LiDAR and camera navigation differ.
Carpet, pet hair and suction
Neither spec sheet tells you which robot cleans carpet more deeply. Roborock rates the Q Revo's suction in pascals, while iRobot has generally described Roomba suction in relative terms, so you can't compare the numbers directly. Pickup also depends on brush design, airflow and carpet pile, not suction alone.
What you can compare:
- Brushes: The j9+ uses two rubber rollers, a design iRobot markets as resistant to hair tangles. The Q Revo uses a single main brush. With long human hair, expect to clear either one occasionally.
- Floor mix: In a mostly carpeted home, you'd pay for a mopping dock you'd rarely use.
- Independent results: If carpet pickup is your priority, look for reviews that measure debris pickup on carpet instead of relying on marketing copy.
Roborock Q Revo vs iRobot Roomba j7+
The j7+ is the earlier model in the same line. It has the same camera-based obstacle avoidance and bagged Clean Base, and it doesn't mop either. iRobot positioned the j9+ above it with claims of stronger suction. It also promoted a j9+ feature called Dirt Detective, which sends the robot to the rooms that tend to get dirtiest first.
So the Q Revo vs j7+ decision follows the same logic. The Q Revo gives you mopping and dock automation; the j7+ gives you object recognition. Pick the j7+ over the j9+ only if it costs noticeably less.
Roborock QX Revo vs Roomba
"QX Revo" turns up in some listings and searches. Roborock uses the Q Revo name across several variants with different suction ratings, docks and sensors. Don't assume a QX Revo matches the model described here. Before comparing it with any Roomba, check the product page for:
- Suction rating and main brush design
- Dock jobs: auto-empty, pad washing, drying, water refill, detergent dispensing
- How far the mop pads lift on carpet
- Obstacle detection type: LiDAR only, or LiDAR plus a camera or structured light
- Seller and warranty: who honors it in the U.S.
Then pin down which Roomba you're comparing it with. iRobot's lineup runs from vacuum-only robots like the j9+ to models with mop-washing docks. The right answer depends entirely on that choice.
Parts, service and the iRobot question
Both robots need parts you'll rebuy regularly:
- Q Revo: dock dust bags, mop pads, main and side brushes, filter
- Roomba j9+: Clean Base bags, rubber rollers, edge brush, filter
Before you buy, confirm these parts are sold by the brand or reputable retailers. Keep a spare pack of bags so the dock never sits full.
The bigger caveat is iRobot itself. The company has been through serious financial trouble since Amazon's planned acquisition fell apart in early 2024. Before buying a j9+ or j7+, confirm three things:
- Who honors the warranty
- Whether the iRobot Home app is still getting updates
- Whether bags and rollers are easy to find
Our robot vacuum news roundup tracks what to buy, wait on or skip.
For Roborock, buy from the brand or an authorized retailer so U.S. warranty coverage applies. Be wary of marketplace listings with no clear seller.
Which one should you buy?
Get the Roborock Q Revo if:
- Hard floors make up most of your home.
- You want mopping handled with minimal hands-on work.
- You want precise LiDAR maps for setting up rooms and no-mop zones.
- You don't mind a quick pickup before each run.
Get the Roomba j9+ if:
- Carpet and rugs dominate, and you don't need mopping.
- Cords, socks, toys or pet accidents are a regular problem.
- You want a slimmer dock with no water tanks to manage.
- You've confirmed warranty and parts support.
Get neither if you want mopping and smarter obstacle handling in one robot. Three options worth a look:
- Dreame X50 Ultra: lists obstacle avoidance alongside auto-emptying and mop self-cleaning.
- Roomba Max 875: if you'd rather stay with iRobot, it covers the mopping the j9+ lacks. It has an AutoWash Dock, 80°C (176°F) mopping and washing, and a retractable mop cover.
- Roborock QV 35A: a Roborock built on the same idea as the Q Revo, listed with 8,000 Pa suction and a multifunctional dock. Check exactly which dock jobs it handles.
If you mostly vacuum carpet around pets, a dedicated pet-hair or self-emptying robot vacuum may be all you need.
Before you buy: quick checklist
- Measure the dock spot. Compare the listed dock dimensions with your space, plus any clearance the manual asks for.
- Estimate your floor split. Mostly hard floors favor the Q Revo; mostly carpet favors the j9+.
- Be honest about clutter. If cords and socks live on your floor, object recognition matters more than mopping.
- Plan for water chores. The Q Revo's dock needs regular refills and emptying.
- Compare against newer robots. Make sure the Q Revo or j9+ price is low enough given what newer models offer for the same money.
- Check the seller, warranty and return window. This matters even more for the j9+.
- Price the replacement parts. Look up bag, pad and brush costs before you commit.
